OpenSER project forked
Filed Under news | 2 Comments
Recently I read a book for VoIP and at some point I found reference to OenSER project.
After visiting the site www.openser.org I was welcomed with the message that OpenSER is now OpenSIPS as you can see from the screenshot.
Why the project forked?
Some answers could be found on the initial post on opensips users mail list:
Hello everybody,
A new project – OpenSIPs (Open SIP Server) – became active today(post is dated Mon Aug 4 11:29:30 CEST 2008), with its first release (OpenSIPS 1.4.0).
What is OpenSIPS about?
OpenSER History:
—————-
Voice System started the OpenSER project with a vision of running an open project that will deliver a professional software. Along the years Voice System was the main contributor and sustainer of the OpenSER
project, organizing conferences, events and tutorials, all aiming to consolidate OpenSER as a top solution for industry VoIP.
OpenSER Issues:
—————
In the past time, several critical problems related to OpenSER project were identified by us:
– the need for a new reliable release – delayed or low-quality releases are affecting the credibility of the project
– degradation of the project quality – testing, performance measurements and code quality control are overlooked
– lack of the control, management and coordination of the project – critical project issues could not be handled or solved
OpenSIPS Solutions:
——————–
OpenSIPS is a continuation of the OpenSER project – we have a moral obligation to develop and deliver the high quality and reliable software we envisioned when starting OpenSER.
1) a 6 months release cycle, but with no compromise for the technical issues
2) extensive testing and performance measurements before each major release
3) contributions are guaranteed to be answered and integrated (if accepted) in less than 1 month
4) code review, architecture control and integrated design for software quality
5) technical management with a strict developer hierarchy and developer cooperation to prevent deadlocks or un-availabilities
6) intellectual honesty by having decisions taken on value-based criteria and arguments.
It seems that the development is sponsored by voice-system.ro?!
And the development of opensips is continued as Kamailio.
Maybe we will see better product development after this fork or … – only time will show.

I’ll experiment a bit….
Until now only registered users were able to leave comments.
The reason behind was a automated bot leaving 100-s of comments on my blog.
But on other side even when I want to leave a comment in somebody’s blog I resist to do it if registration is required. So I’ve decided to try and see if bot will break to the antispam protection.
Enjoy.

Go-OO

“Go-OO” – what is that?
Actually that was my first reaction when I read about this project.
And the answer pops on the first page of the web site.
“Your office suite. Better, Faster, Freerer.”
Go-OO is based on OpenOffice.org code, but the developpers added:
- interoperability – better OpenXML support, Works filter, VBA scripting
- functionality – better Chinese support, interface polishing
- speed – 20-30% faster
More information could be found on their discover page.
So visit their site and get it…

Dan Kaminski discovered flaw in foundations of internet – DNS servers. Even he kept silence about the details exploit was published on internet. So if you want to be safe visit his blog to check your DNS servers.
Without them everyone should maintain their own hosts name linking IP address and FQDN (fully qualified domain name such as “blog.hbcom.info” or “www.google.com”). For more information about DNS system check here.
There is a lot of discussions on internet. Just a sample of them:
Recovered for Internet Archive Link: http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1546
(Thank you Rachel for the tip.)
http://rdist.root.org/2008/07/21/dns-novice-discovers-secret-flaw/
and many more…
For me is unclear how this flaw affects the users behind caching only server. My understanding is that for cache to be poisoned it should accept the request first. So it could be done only from insiders. So majority of users are not affected. And the flaw affects more ISP’s and other similar setups.
Also we (users) should have more explanations since it seems that all patches only randomize the source port of the request. If this is the solution there is no need to apply patch just change the configuration to randomize he ports.
Note: This is serious flaw and nothing could guaranteed.

“UPS Virus” – UPDATE
Filed Under Fix, Windows | Leave a Comment
Today I was hit with a 0-day virus – ZBot/Backdoor.Paproxy or whatever antivirus companies call it.
It came as E-mail claiming to be from UPS (You guess now why UPS virus is in quotes) and was a zip file with executable inside. UPS_INVOICE_978172.zip to be exact, but there are several variants.
Usually the common is that they contain as subject line:”[RE] UPS Tracking Number” followed by random number.
Most of the e-mails were detected (as spam) by the antivirus scanner on mail gateway, but some reached end users.
To be honest this one was really good in attracting them (the users) to open it and some did….
This was no pleasant experience. Right away PC rebooted and trojan was installed.
Other problem was that there was only 2 companies who were able to detect it this morning (the number increased to 13 afternoon).
After updated virus definitions from Symantec were installed Backdoor was detected and removed.
Lesson learned: NEVER open executable from attachment.
Here you ca see if your antivirus is up to date with that particular virus.
UPDATE: There are new versions not recognized by Symantec yet. So follow above lesson.

- Issue command to repair – repair table <name of the table>
- Sit back and wait – it will take some time

Clean your ThinkPad from beginning
Filed Under Fix, Howto, Windows | Leave a Comment
Lenovo is shipping new ThinkPads preinstalled with huge amount of software you do not really need.
This slows the boot process to the levels new computer should not be.
Here is the list of software I removed from T61:
- All MS Office related (trial) – Later I’ll install the products we have license for
- SQL server (yes it is installed) related
- Windows Live toolbar
- Norton Internet Security – Will replace it with Norton Endpoint Protection
Other option is to reinstall the system from scratch.
Excellent tutorial on how to do it
Tip: Do not connect the system to internet until you are ready to. It starts right away to download and install windows updates and will slow down the machine.
